This is an ancient Scandinavian Viking silver finger ring, dating to the 9th - 10th century A.D. The ring is formed from three graduated rods of silver twisted together, the terminals hammered and welded to form a complete round ring. This example is a good piece of Viking age jewellery, worn as both wedding and oath rings. The two rods a metaphor for two lives entwined in union, or as an 'oath ring' for the subject and his Jarl's fates inextricably linked as one. Today this wonderful piece has survived the centuries in good wearable condition, with a natural patina from excavation.
