This is a wonderful Viking silver finger ring, dating to the 9th - 10th century A.D. The ring is formed with rods, twisted together and welded. The terminals tapered to enable the ring to be adjusted in size. This example is a good piece of Viking age jewellery, worn as both wedding and oath rings. The two rods a metaphor for two lives entwined in union, or as an 'oath ring' for the subject and his Jarl's fates inextricably linked as one. Today this wonderful piece has survived the centuries in excellent wearable condition, with a good natural patina from excavation.
